Sadly, the Toshinden series never managed to see a next-gen makeover. On the bright side, the memorable character designs and cool artwork of the series has a place in fighting game history. Toshinden 4 keeps the trend going, with great artwork and some cool designs Click Here for all box artwork! Battle Arena Toshinden 4 STORY : Ten years after the events of Toshinden 3 , Eiji Shinjo, who is now the new leader of an organization called the "Gerard Foundation", has organized a fourth Toshinden tournament which revolves around the gathering of four holy weapons that can be used to either save the world or destroy it.
Eiji's old enemy, Vermilion, is after the four holy weapons for his own malevolent ambition and that many fighters from within the tournament, including Eiji's own nephew Subaru, will find themselves getting caught from within the conflict itself. Can Eiji stop Vermilion before it's too late? The King of Page Updated :. June 16th, Developer s :. Publisher s :. Takara , Studio3. Everyone stood around, mouths agape, crying: "Blimey, I've never seen the likes of this before, looks kinda spunky!
The game will basically follow the same structure as most fighting titles: using an array of combo and special moves plus magical weaponry you have to despatch each character in turn, all of which increase in strength as you progress. The PC conversion is very near completion but you can try it for yourself thanks to the demo on this month's cover disc.
Of course the final version will have far more detail, plus a couple of new features and characters that don't appear in the PlayStation format. Probably the most important point to make at this stage is the inclusion of code in the finished product that will support a number of 3D accelerators which ones has yet to be confirmed , but nevertheless this means that it will look and play with much more fluidity than a standard PC 3D game.
This seems to be the way forward for many developers, and under the Windows 95 desktop this 3D code will be supported regardless of the make of the accelerator in your machine; the upshot of this is that thankfully there's unlikely to be the sort of VHS versus Betamax type of format war that the PC is desperately hoping to avoid. Toshinden will be the only tournament-style fighting game that supports full degree rotation - Virtua Fighter on the Diamond Edge is true 3D, but it doesn't run on a standard PC and the rotation during combat falls i short of a complete turn.
During combat in the Toshinden arena it will be possible to alter the viewpoint from 'eye in the sky' down to a very close and in your face angle. All the PlayStation characters are here with their special moves, but it is still unclear how the eight-button PlayStation pad control method will be translated to the PC - it still seems to have problems with four-button pads! Needless to say, all the moves will be included and Digital Dialect have gone to great lengths to recreate the impressive lighting and magical effects in the PlayStation version.
Choose from the whip-lashing Sofia, the ultra quick, sword wielding Eeiji or the botty wielding, fart releasing Fo, the old man with a digestion problem. Toshinden is primarily a two-player game but the single-player one will contain extra features over the original version, including an extra level and secret hidden characters.
Another advantage over the PlayStation will be the ability to play via serial cable, modem and IPX network - the word Tournament will really mean something when there are eight players involved. Toshinden will run on most machines, although a Pentium is recommended. Options to reduce shading effects and detail levels in the characters and impressive backdrops will be incorporated, so there's no need for owners to panic at the sight of these screenshots.
Having played the incredible PlayStation version on more than a few occasions, the PC team is probably more critical than most, but examining this early version with an open mind and without bias, it's looking absolutely incredible, especially when compared to some of the current fighting games. Battle Arena Toshinden looks like it should hit PC owners in all the right places -and hit them hard, like a good fighter should.

Some of the attacks are some of the coolest around, especially the ones when guns are used. Still, Toshinden is a solid buy simply for the amount of characters.
Toshinden 3 is full of pizazz, but it's overdone. Combos are too easy to execute two-button, hit combos? No skill needed there! But if you don't take this game too seriously, you can have fun with it Like Killer Instinct or X-Men , it's a different style of fighting game that's fun. This newest Toshinden-the best-looking of the series-may be packed with new characters, but there's nothing new about its ultra-simple gameplay.
The arenas may have been enclosed, but now it's almost as easy to juggle opponents against the walls as it was to knock them out of the ring in past games. Press random buttons really fast and you'll do fine. The year is definitely the year of the "three" sequels. Battle Arena Toshinden 3 is corning to the PlayStation.
In this rendition, it seems that Takara has a keen eye on the play mechanics of the PS megahit Tekken. The first thing added was a double amount of characters. Now, all the regular cast have their semi-different doppelganger versions. As in Tekken. There are also two hidden characters that only Toshinden masters will be able to play as. As with many fighting games lately. Toshinden 3 has an extended combo system. You can now pull off multiple- hit combos as well as juggling moves.
With proper usage of the special moves, you can trap an opponent against a wall that's right-no more ring-outs for some massive combo damage. The newest type of special maneuver is called the Soul Bomb. The number of Soul Bombs at your disposal depends on the number of rounds you fight in per match. Adding a bit more strategy is the super powerful Parry Attack and the ability to rebound yourself off of a wall and attack the person who just knocked you into it. There are two different video modes that allow you to view the action in 30 or 60 frames per second.
Sixty frames moves smoother and faster, but you lose the textures. Choose which mode is best for you. With so many characters and special features, Toshinden 3 will have fans of the first two games returning for another round of fighting action. When the PlayStation was first released, one of the games that helped to sell the system was Battle Arena Toshinden. Now, only about a year and a half later, the third Toshinden game is making its debut on Sony's polygon-pushing machine.
When the second game was released, many complained that it didn't add enough to the series other than a few new characters. It seems as though the creators have been listening, because there are ample new features to keep fans of the series happy. The most noticeable new feature is the incredible number of playable characters. There are a whopping 32 characters to choose from, if you are skilled enough to learn them all. Like the PlayStation's other big 3-D fighting series Tekken , beating the game with different characters allows you to play as a particular sub-Boss.
The sub-Bosses are all variations of their main opponent.
